Damn, I missed all the winter greens at the nursery, swear they were there just a few weeks ago… I didn’t see arugula there either & according to Seattle Tilth it’s a great thing to plant as ground cover in October & grows like a weed crowding out other weeds “& tasty to boot”. But eh. ‘Swhat I get for having slow garden inspiration. As a consolation prize for making it out to the nursery anyway, I got M1 her own chives, & me some leeks & a meyer’s lemon tree. Except it’s really more of a bushlet at this point. It’s very pretty though. Maybe some day I’ll have my own lemons! M2 got her own reward by sneaking a package of lupine seeds up to the register & finding a $5 bill sitting on (in?) one of the wooden benches she tried out between running with glee from fountain to fountain.

Came home & dug under the romas. I think I’m going to bail on them. They always get blossom end rot. The cherry tomatoes & other tomatoes seem to do fine & I’m fine with that. Also pruned the out of control rosemary in the front yard.

English muffins rising, waiting for the pie to bubble, mole accomplished & it’s just simmering… That means I can get off my feet for a moment.

While I was doing that, the little girls & their father decorated the house with Halloween stuff. My goodness. That’s a lot of Halloween stuff.

Amazingly, despite the wacky money stuff in the news (hello new bank!), people are still driving by & peering in our windows. Unsurprisingly, no one actually requested a showing.

The walk to the farmers’ market this morning was very pleasant. It was the perfect temperature. Maybe even a little warm. We got more beets. I love beets. So red & tasty. Especially roasted. We didn’t see any scallions. I looked at the granny smith apples & didn’t get any. Then I got home & when I finished with the initial mix of English muffin dough, I realized, damn, pie. So I made cherry instead. It seems a little odd to be making cherry pie this late in the year. Pumpkin or apple next time. Mmm. Pie.

I’m sad that next weekend is the last farmers’ market of the year. I know we can go to the Ballard one, but… we can’t walk there & it’s been so nice to be able to get out and walk to the market. Ah well.

Mmm. Suddenly very… sleepy…

Walked to the local farmer’s market for the week’s produce? Check. English muffins started? Check. Pizza crust for dinner? Aborted because the stupid realtor gave us notice that she’d be here “in 15 minutes” and was here within five — after telling us yesterday that she’d be here a half hour to an hour & a half later than she actually appeared. Universe? It’s getting old, even though grilled salmon is the alternative dinner plan now. Run to the grocery store for the remainder of the week’s eatin’ supplies? Check. Seems like I should have more checked, but… those things take time so I guess maybe not. Another five lbs of flour weekend. Didn’t get to the gardening, but I did get the tomatoes pinned up. It’s too hot to do much with the poor plants out there anyway.

Note to self: use gloves when cutting peppers from now on. The ongoing hot fingertips from cutting peppers last night? Not so much with the entertaining.

I made cinnamon rolls last night, baked this morning. The house still smells of cinnamon mixed with a pleasant summer’s day breeze drifting through the house carrying it along. I don’t think I’m going to get around to any other bread products this weekend. My middle is probably thankful for that, though my taste buds are sad.

We walked down to the farmer’s market today again. We got eggplant, various zucchini/squashes (who knew, the little girls actually like them! Woo!), blueberries (but they’re all already et), and various and sundry other tasties. We’re having corn on the cob (grilled) & hamburgers & a Big Salad for dinner tonight. I’m totally looking forward to it.

We also started a compost bin today, house-for-sale be damned. We’re so tired of feeling like we have to wait to do things, wait to establish routines we’d like to establish, waiting, waiting, waiting…

I’m pretty completely infatuated with the idea of getting an electric bicycle to commute to work with right now. Still in the research stages, but it would fit exercise into my day, reduce some gas costs (not driving the car as much), reduce carbon mon?di?oxide, lower car insurance (assuming I do it regularly)… Infatuation, yes, and also still pleasant weather during the 1/4 of the year when it’s not steady drizzle/rain… But if I got in the habit when it’s nice, it’s easier to maintain the habit when it’s not, right? Or something?

The little girls in the neighborhood are all outside decorating the cul-de-sac with chalk. How funny — firefox spell check recommends “testicular” as a spelling correction for “culdesac”. Oh, firefox spell check!

I was sad today at the farmer’s market. The honey lady wasn’t there. I wanted to ask her some questions — like if she was also the beekeeper. And other stuff. Of course, even had she been there, whether or not I’d have actually talked with her is up for question. I feel awkward asking questions like that, never quite sure where to take the discussion. Goes back to my apprehension at hearing from a PM at work that I really like that I never come with questions, I come for verification that I’ve already got the answer. I don’t like not knowing the answer so I do my research & try to figure out the answers and then I find someone likely to be knowledgeable to verify & in doing that, I think I miss out on all kinds of things. Conversely I have so many questions (answers to verify?) that I have a huge, overwhelming list that I ask all at once. Ish. Or in rapid fire. Anyway, none of that is either here nor there for today.

Mmm. Sleepy afternoon, all of a sudden…

I have 12 English muffins about an hour or so from grilling. And I have 12 bagels about 15 minutes from shaping. They’ll get baked tomorrow.

Sadly, I have a sore, sore temptation to start in on yet another bread, but I’m going to have to try to restrain myself. Because really. I already have quite, quite, quite a lot of bread-y type food that will be done when I’m done with these three…

And today I made: two loaves of sammich bread, one loaf of some seriously fancy garlic bread (dip the raw bread slices in melted butter, chopped garlic, & fresh parsley then smoosh all the slices into the bread pan), and a dozen bagels. Seriously — why I get inspired to make bread on hot days is beyond me. But daaaamn, I make some tasty bread. Oh yes I do! I’m also excited. I bought my brother for his birthday The Breadmaker’s Apprentice & just ordered it online. Oh, maybe that was the inspiration — it’s a gorgeous book. I can’t wait to have my own copy, the recipes with which to tweak in my own particular way.

We went geocaching today — it was a microcache & we weren’t quite sure what we were looking for. I think I have a better idea now, it’s only as long as about three quarters & about that wide. We’ll go back & try that one again in the future. It’s the perfect excuse to go do that then get ice cream since it’s right across the street (kind of) from Baskin-Robbins. As it was, it was a nice excuse to get out & walk about a mile to a very pretty little preserve stashed away. I was surprised by how many people actually were there, but then *everyone* seemed to be out today. Next time we won’t park quite so far away!

Time to go check on the bagels!

So… the thing with relaxation… I’ve been pretty wound tight for the last I don’t know how many years. I relax and all I can do is realize how tired I am… I slept a lot of today. Now I’m hennaing my hair.

This morning we got another call, three realtors brought clients by today, this morning. We vacated and went to Barnes and Nobles to browse for books and things. On our way, my dad called & said their house sold. He wasn’t happy about what it sold for, but… it sold! In a market that makes the one we’re in look really, really good. Actually the inspection is tomorrow and closing is on June 16th. I’ll feel better about saying their house is sold when it’s through inspections… and then through final closing… but, it’s more than we’ve gotten so far. I’m happy for them though — that means they’ll be up in Seattle & a little closer to their grandkids who adore them. And the house that my Dad has wanted to live in I think probably since he left it as a young man.

Anyway, back to B&N… Their linguistics & philosophy sections are sadly understocked. I did find an entertaining looking linguistics book though — Far From the Maddening Gerund: and other dispatches from Language Log. Not quite what I was looking for, but it will do betwixt the other three or so books I’m paging through.

M2 found a book on fairies that’s so sweetly drawn & pretty much perfect for her age when we’re not doing the ABC thing. M1 had a gift certificate from her birthday? Christmas? She got The Secret Garden, The Little Princess, & Little House in the Big Woods. I think she’s half way through The Secret Garden already. She’s thanked me several times for recommending it to her. Sweet girl. Then we bought lunch and ended our adventure.

Then we came home & I napped most of the afternoon. All I wanted to do was lie down. Though I did get sourdough pizza crust (and pizza!) made. Artichoke heart & goat cheese was one of them, pineapple was the other. OM NOM NOM NOM. After dinner, the girls and I read, two chapters out of the Cat Who book that M1 & I are working through, and two chapters of the fairy book we got today for M2. They both crashed out, and… my hair is hennaing, the Mariners are bombing, and TimTheCat is curled up next to me. I think I’ll sleep well again tonight despite all the napping this afternoon.
