This is a Public Service Announcement from my brother who was in a minor car-bike accident this afternoon/evening. He was on the bike, lady made a right-turn w/o signalling in front of him, he slammed on brakes & bike flew over her hood. Many years of judo & skateboarding gave him the falling reflexes he needed to survive with just a scrape or two and without breaking anything.

He’s fine, though he said he had to calm the poor lady down. Apparently she was very shaken & gibbering on about how she liked bicyclists & that they were great to see around town & that she really likes them & that she tries to be careful of them and likes them, etc, etc. When he was done with that, he hopped back on his bike, he went off to finish getting M1’s birthday present & wandered around the toy store in a little bit of shock as what just happened sunk in. He says the gift has our Mom’s approval (like anything Uncle A would buy wouldn’t get total-adored-uncle-buy-in from pretty much everyone).

< deep breath > Aaaannnnndddd his public service announcement is along the lines of ‘don’t just wear the helmet — if you’re biking in an urban location, do the bike maintenance course and the urban biking safety course too. Maybe do the latter multiple times to really ingrain it…
